One main source for precious stones in Mozambique is located about 100km southwest of Nampula in the Shalawa area, the famous gemstone region of Mavuco. The operation works pegmatite as well as close-by alluvial deposits. The excavation produces aquamarine, morganite and tourmaline, whereas the tourmaline of the alluvial deposits includes the desirable copper-bearing Paraiba tourmaline.
